The Library of Congress is an amazing resource. You will learn to navigate its breadth and organization to find what’s available, narrow your search to what’s applicable and access what you need in a format that’s usable. “Foundations” not only demonstrates the value of primary sources in instruction and sample learning experiences, it also gives you the technological foundation to find resources amid millions of digitized options that grow all the time. You will leave this course with primary sources that fit your instructional style and plenty of ideas for using primary sources to enrich instruction.
Goal
Teachers become familiar with the breadth and organization of the Library of Congress' digital primary sources, understand their value in instruction and create basic inquiry-based learning experiences.
Objectives
Upon completion participants should be able to:
  • Explain what primary sources are and understand their value in teaching
  • Locate and navigate the Library of Congress website
  • Access, save and present primary sources from the Library of Congress website
  • Gain a foundational understanding of best instructional practices for teaching with primary sources
  • Create basic inquiry-based learning experiences that integrate primary sources from the Library of Congress website
Assignment
This assignment is made of 4 learning parts to understand how to find and analyze Primary Sources from the Library of Congress Website (www.loc.gov) in K-12.
Please, find and learn interactive video modules for each learning topic below. There are two documents you need to turn in and they are written in RED.
Part 1: Introduction to the Library of Congress

Activity 1:
1) Download the attached PDF file of Finding Primary Sources.
2) You are asked to study the information presented on the document and complete activities in the same PDF file.
3) Submit the PDF file with your completed answers on activity questions through Blackboard.
Part 3: Copyright and Primary Sources

Learn how to evaluate primary sources from the Library’s collections for the best use within copyright. Listen to several teachers as they evaluate the use of primary sources of use with their students.
Part 4: Analyzing Primary Sources: Photographs and Prints

There are many different types of primary sources. Here, you will learn how photographs and prints from the Library’s collections can increase student engagement in the classroom
Activity 2:
1) Follow interactive learning activity through the video to learn how to analyze photographs and prints.
2) Download a PDF file of primary sources analysis tool and a PDF file of teacher’s guides (Analyzing Primary Sources.pdf)
3) Find and analyze a photograph or a print based on the primary sources analysis tool.
4) Submit your complete primary sources analysis tool via Blackboard.
